Abstract

A Research on Cognitive Distortion in Working Adults

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) pioneered by Aaron T. Beck, mentions about cognitive distortions and negative forms of thinking that cause negative emotions and behaviors by emphasizing the structures of thought that affect human emotions, bodily reactions and behaviors. These thinking mistakes lead to problems in interpersonal relationships, work life and societal dimension by mediating difficulties in a fleet ranging from mild communication conflicts to serious psychological disorders (as cited in Türküm, 2003). When we look at the working life today, the dissatisfaction of employees in most enterprises is becoming an increasingly problematic issue. The aim of the current study is to examine the cognitive distortion levels of working adults in terms of some socio-demographic variables. For this purpose, 18 females and 14 males were included in the study. The participants are given The Cognitive Distortion Scale-R (CDS-R), a revised version of the Non-Rational Thinking Scale developed by Türküm (1996) and a Personal Information Form of socio-demographic information, As a result, the cognitive distortions in working individuals were found to be 57.03 ± 7.94 points, which means that they have a "high" level of cognitive distortion. When the relationship between cognitive distortion levels and socio-demographic variables is evaluated, it was understood that there was a significant difference in relation only between of the level of education and cognitive distortion. In this connection, it is revealed that the highest level of cognitive distortion scores exist in "low educated" (elementary degree) people and the lowest cognitive distortion scores were obtained in "high educated" (associate and bachelor degree) individuals.
