Abstract

Investigation of Relationship Between Nomophobia and Loneliness Level: Erciyes University Sample

Purpose: It is not clear whether there is a relationship between the person's desire to access the mobile device and their anxiety about access and feeling loneliness in the literature. To clarify this issue, the nomophobia and loneliness levels of university students were studied in this research: gender, grade level, faculty, the settlement where spent most of life, and academic achievement levels. Methodology: Quantitative research method was used in this research. Survey research model was used among the quantitative research methods. The participants of this research are 543 undergraduate students, 315 of whom are women and 228 of whom are men, studying at Erciyes University. In the research, two-stage random sampling, which is one of the random sampling types, was used to determine the study group. Data were collected using Personal Information Form, Nomophobia Scale and UCLA Loneliness Scale-III. In the analysis of the data; descriptive statistics, t test for independent samples, one-way analysis of variance (One-way ANOVA) and Pearson correlation analysis were performed. Findings: As a result of the correlation analysis between the nomophobia and loneliness levels of the participants, no significant relationship was found (r=,016; p>.05). When the nomophobia and loneliness levels of the participants were examined according to their gender, it was concluded that the nomophobia levels of the female participants were higher than the male participants [t (541) = 2,512; p<.05]. When nomophobia and loneliness levels are analyzed according to the grade levels of the participants, the nomophobia levels of the 3rd grade participants are higher than the participants in the 4th grade [F (3,539) = 3,132, p <.05]; It was observed that the loneliness levels of the participants in the 2nd grade were higher than the participants in the 4th grade [F (3,539) = 3,116, p <.05]. When the nomophobia levels of the participants are analyzed according to the faculty where they studied, it was observed that the nomophobia levels of the participants studying at the Faculty of Communication were higher than the participants studying at the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the nomophobia levels of the students studying at the Faculty of Health Sciences were higher than the participants studying at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine [F(5.537) = 3,132, p<.05]. When the nomophobia levels of the participants were analyzed according to their academic success levels, it was concluded that the nomophobia levels of the participants with an academic achievement level of 3.00-4.00 was higher than the participants with an achievement level of 0-2.99 [t (433) = -2, 834; p<.05]. Results: With this research, the effect of the participants' gender, grade level, faculty, the settlement where spent most of life and academic achievement levels on the average scores of loneliness levels were investigated. The absence of a significant relationship between nomophobia and loneliness differs from previous studies. Therefore, there are more research needed to comment on the relationship between nomophobia and loneliness.
