Abstract


Children’s Questions Through Their Mother’s Answers In Early Childhood Term

The aim of the study is to examine the ‘five Ws and one H’ questions asked by the children aged four to six years and their mothers’ responses to these questions. This study was designed in a qualitative model, using basic qualitative research design. There were two stages in the study; the first stage formed the basis for the second stage. At this stage, the most frequently asked questions of 4-6-year-old children were determined. The data obtained from this analysis were used to determine mother’s answering their children’s questions in the second step. The study group is consisted of 42 mothers at the first stage and 12 mothers at the second stage. Questionnaire was used at the first stage; semi-structured interview form was used at the second stage. The content and descriptive analysis was used for data analysis. As a result of the analysis, the children's questions were grouped under two main themes: philosophical and knowledge-based questions. While the philosophical-based questions covered only one category of Why/How Questions, the knowledge-based questions included seven categories as nature, physiological development, concepts, environment/daily labor, technology, religion and animals. The ways of answering the questions of the children by the mothers were evaluated under nine categories. Through this study findings, no matter what educational level and field they have, it is recommended that all mothers can be trained on issues such as communication with children, children’s questions and children’s developmental characteristics.
