Abstract


A Content Analysis in Reference to Social Media and Consumption Culture

Consumption in today’s societies is seen as a status indicator rather than a need-based thing. This leads people both to consuming all the time and exhibiting their consumption and life styles. Social media provides a convenient environment with people to perform it. Therefore, it draws intensive attention. Today people display their consumption and life styles by means of their accounts on social media platforms. However, this results in emulating of other people who are interested in their shares. In this context, the aim of this study is to detect the effects of social media on production and spread of consumption culture. In the frame of this aim, the 3-month shares of 9 Instagram users were examined with content analysis method. In the study, it is concluded that Instagram users can affect the consumption of their followers by means of their shares and awaken their feelings to consume the equivalent items. From this aspect, it is possible to say that social media has become an effective tool in the production and spread of consumption culture.
