Abstract

Investigation of Violent Incidents Against Medical Secretaries: A Public Hospital Case

In this study, it was aimed to determine whether the medical secretaries are exposed to violence, the characteristics of the violent incident and the type of the violence event according to the characteristics of the perpetrators, the employees, and the violence. The study was carried out between February-June 2017 and consists of medical secretaries working in a public hospital. The sample was not selected in the study and it was tried to reach the whole universe and in total 120 (71%) of the available surveys were obtained. In this study, “The Violent Incident Form” developed by Arnetz (1998) was used as a data collection tool. The data obtained from the research was transferred to SPSS 25.0 program and descriptive statistics and chi-square analysis were used in the analysis. As a result of the analyzes, it was found that 51.70% of the medical secretaries were subjected to violence and 83.90% of the violence type was verbal violence. It was observed that most of the perpetrators were relatives of the patient (69,40%) and men (90,30%). It was determined that the violence was mostly experienced in the emergency department (33.90%), many were working alone during the attack (64.50%) and no administrative/judicial proceedings were performed (83.90%). In addition, it was found that the type of violence was statistically significant for the age of the employee, the time when the employee was exposed to violence, the situation of working alone, the place where the attack was subjected and the process performed as a result of the incident (p <0,05). It is thought that the results obtained from the study will provide important evidence-based information to health managers in minimizing the incidence of violence.
